Wheatland Settlers Village

Welcome to Wheatland Settlers Village, a living testament to the resilience and spirit of early American settlers in the Hickory County area. Our journey takes us back to the 19th century, as we explore the 11 log buildings that have been meticulously preserved and relocated here from various parts of this region. Each structure is a window into the past, offering a glimpse of what life was like for these hardy pioneers who braved countless challenges in their pursuit of a new beginning.

As we step into the village, youll immediately notice the distinct aroma of wood smoke and fresh earth, transporting you to an era when life was simpler yet more demanding. You can almost hear the clatter of horses hooves on the cobblestone streets, as well as the bustling chatter of villagers trading goods at the local market.

Your first stop is the General Store, a hub for socializing and commerce in the early days. Here, you can learn about the various items that were essential to daily life, such as clothing made from raw materials like wool and flax, tools for farming and hunting, and staple foods like corn and wheat.

Next, we visit the one-room schoolhouse where children would gather under the guidance of their teacher, who was often also a preacher or local leader. The room is filled with wooden desks and slate boards, providing an intimate look into the educational system of the time.

The villages blacksmith shop is another must-see attraction, showcasing the vital role these skilled craftsmen played in creating and repairing tools and equipment for the community. Listen closely as you hear the rhythmic clanging of metal on metal, echoing through the air like a symphony of sweat and determination.

The yearly mid-September festival is not to be missed, with its lively demonstrations of traditional crafts such as spinning wool, weaving baskets, and churning butter. Visitors can even try their hand at some of these activities, immersing themselves in the experience of being a settler for a day.

As you continue your tour, youll come across several other buildings that help paint a vivid picture of life in this bygone era: the doctors office, where medical care was rudimentary at best; the livery stable, where horses were housed and cared for; and the family home, complete with its hearth fire and hand-hewn furniture.

Wheatland Settlers Village is more than just a collection of historic buildings—its an immersive experience that allows us to connect with our ancestors on a deeply personal level. By stepping back in time, we can better appreciate the sacrifices they made and the spirit that drove them to forge new lives amidst uncertainty and adversity.
