The story begins in 1921 when a local booster organization, the Urbana Hotel Company, began raising funds to build a grand hotel in Urbana. By selling shares, they amassed $223,000, and construction of the Urbana-Lincoln Hotel commenced in 1923. Designed by the notable local architect Joseph Royer, the hotel opened its doors in November of the same year, showcasing a stunning Tudor Revival style with its distinctive half-timbering.
The hotel was a symbol of elegance and hospitality, but financial difficulties soon arose. By 1937, the original hotel company went bankrupt. However, a new management team, the Urbana-Lincoln Company, took over in 1944, breathing new life into the establishment with modern upgrades.
The next significant chapter came in 1964, when the Lincoln Square Mall was constructed as an extension of the hotel, marking it as one of Illinois’ first fully enclosed shopping centers outside of the Chicago area. This development was part of a broader effort to invigorate Urbana’s economy during a time of stagnation. The mall’s grand opening was attended by Illinois Governor Otto Kerner, Jr., and both of the state’s U.S. Senators, underscoring its significance.
Despite these efforts, the hotel faced challenges and closed in 1975. It was saved from demolition when the Jumer Hotel chain acquired and renovated it, reopening later in the decade. Fast forward to the 21st century, the hotel changed hands multiple times, with significant renovations undertaken by various owners. By 2025, Icon Hospitality LLC completed a massive renovation, reopening it as the Hotel Royer Urbana, honoring the original architect Joseph Royer.
