Toomers Oaks are a pair of historic oak trees located at 112 S College St, Auburn, AL 36849. Established between 1937 and 1939, the original trees were planted across the street from Toomers Drugstore, founded in 1896 by Elijah Toomer with a $500 loan from John Reese. This corner was also home to the Bank of Auburn. The trees served as a gathering place for students who frequented Toomers soda fountain to purchase items like magazines and ice cream. In 2014, the store was sold to Shels but still operates under its historic name. Today, researchers are sequencing the genome of these oaks in an effort to understand their resilience against diseases. Toomers Corner is famous for its iconic rolling tradition after major athletic victories, which continues even after the removal of the original trees. Southern Living magazine lists visiting this location as one of its Top 100 Things to Do Before You Die.
