The story behind this marker starts with Fannie Paddock, a woman who traveled from New York to Tacoma with the sole purpose of establishing a hospital in this growing city. Unfortunately, she passed away during her journey, but her vision was not lost as the first hospital in Tacoma opened its doors in 1882 in her memory, named Fannie C. Paddock Memorial Hospital, or simply Paddock Hospital.

At first, you could find this iconic institution at 312 South J Street. But as time went by and the citys population grew, so did its healthcare needs. Consequently, the hospital was moved to different locations to cater to these needs, eventually evolving into Tacoma General, which is still standing strong today. This hospital is now a part of MultiCare Health System that continues to serve the region with outstanding healthcare services for over a century now.
