Reuben A. Knoblauch Heritage Park

Welcome to Reuben A. Knoblauch Heritage Park, a cornerstone of community life in Sumner, Washington. Nestled in the historic downtown area, this park is more than just a green space; it is a living testament to the dedication and spirit of the Sumner community.

The park was established in 1995-96, thanks to the collaborative efforts of local families, businesses, and civic groups. The project was initiated by the late Senator Reuben A. Knoblauch, who served in the Washington State Legislature for 30 years until his retirement in 1977. Senator Knoblauch’s contribution was pivotal, as he helped secure the land and materials necessary for the park’s creation.

The site where the park now stands has a rich history. Before it became a community hub, the land was part of a vast 160-acre expanse cultivated by L.F. Thompson with hops. However, the disastrous aphid infestation of 1892-1893 brought the local hops industry to its knees, leading to the land’s eventual donation to the city.

Over time, the park has evolved, reflecting Sumner’s growth and changing community needs. Originally designed with labor and materials donated by the townspeople, the park has been expanded and enhanced to become a focal point for events and gatherings. It hosts the ‘Music Off Main’ series, a beloved summer tradition that draws families for live music under the stars. In recent years, the ‘Movies Off Main’ series was added, bringing cinema to the outdoors with screenings like ‘Top Gun’ and ‘Tangled’.

The park is not just a venue for entertainment; it is a place steeped in community spirit. The ongoing improvements around the park, such as the ‘woonerf’ pedestrian-friendly street enhancements, are part of Sumner’s Main Street Visioning Plan aimed at enhancing the downtown area’s vibrancy.

Reuben A. Knoblauch Heritage Park is a testament to the resilience and communal spirit of Sumner. As you walk through or drive by, think of the generations who have enjoyed this space and the future events that will continue to bring people together in celebration of community and heritage.
