Mount Angel was originally settled in 1850 by Benjamin Cleaver, who initially named the area Roy. However, the name changed multiple times following the arrival of a Benedictine monk, Rev. Fr. Adelhelm Odermatt, in 1881. He, along with a group of monks from Engelberg, Switzerland, established Mount Angel Abbey, and the town was subsequently renamed to reflect its monastic roots, translating ‘Engelberg’ to ‘Mount Angel.’
