First Presbyterian Church of Lott

Imagine being transported back in time, when the dusty streets of Lott, Texas were first bustling with life and promise. It was on March 27, 1892 that the First Presbyterian Church of Lott found its roots in this small town, established by the area Presbytery. The founding Elders hailing from Nazareth Presbyterian Church - one of the oldest Presbyterian congregations in South Carolina - brought with them a rich history and tradition that continues to echo through the hallowed halls of this church even today.

As you stand in front of the church, take note of its beautiful architecture, which has seen three sanctuaries over the years. The first one was built by the congregation themselves back in 1892, and a historical marker commissioned in 1992 proudly commemorates this landmarks history for future generations to appreciate.

The story of First Presbyterian Church began long before its founding in Lott. In fact, it was first founded as Antioch Chapel of Ebenezer Church under Rev. John G. Richards leadership in 1854 on land belonging to the Steeles and Workmans, located about three miles away from Lott. It was initially a part of the Community Meeting House built in 1640, where locals gathered for fellowship and worship before moving into its current location.

In December 1885, First Presbyterian Church was formed as a ministry to the newly established town of Midland, and in 1864, the church building was initially constructed without a bell tower. This important feature was later added in 1896, giving the church its distinctive character that still stands today. The upper cupola, originally made of wood, has since deteriorated and needed to be replaced over time.
