The F5D Skylancer was an experimental jet fighter designed for the United States Navy in the 1950s. Its purpose was to evaluate the possibility of creating a supersonic naval aircraft that could serve as both a reconnaissance platform and a versatile interceptor. The Skylancers distinctive delta-shaped wings were innovative at the time, making it one of the first jets to break the sound barrier during testing.

The historical marker you see before us commemorates the achievements of the F5D Skylancer program and its impact on aviation history. This particular example was built by Convair in San Diego, California, and made numerous test flights out of Wapakonetas Neubauer Airport before it found its permanent home here.
