Clayton Town Square

Welcome to Clayton Town Square, a vibrant part of Clayton, North Carolinas history since its establishment in 1915. As you stand here at the heart of downtown Clayton, between Main Street and S. ONeil and Fayetteville streets, you can feel the rich past that this town carries with it.

Surrounding the square are historic buildings such as The Clayton Center, a cornerstone of the towns community life for over a century. This square was originally built by Samuel Holliman around 1742 and is believed to be one of the oldest surviving structures in Johnston County. So, as you listen to my voice guiding you through this tour, close your eyes and imagine walking on these historic cobblestones more than two centuries ago when it was first established.

This square holds a special place in Claytons history. The town itself was built on a road cut by Governor Tryons troops around 1770, and since then, it has grown into a thriving community with a population of over 16,000 people as per the census conducted in 2010. But despite its growth, Clayton still maintains the charm and warmth of its historic roots.

What makes this square unique is not just its historical significance but also the way it has been preserved and cherished by the townsfolk over time. In January 1972, the Clayton Town Square was added to the National Register of Historic Places, a testament to its enduring value in American history.

As we explore further, you will notice how this square is not just a part of the past but also an active hub for current community events, festivals, and celebrations. It truly represents the spirit of Clayton - a blend of tradition and modernity, all coexisting harmoniously within these historic walls.
