Candor, North Carolina, Norfolk & Western Depot

Welcome to Candor, North Carolina - a town with deep roots in railroad history and industry. Here in the heart of Montgomery County, the town was incorporated in 1891 under the name Lamonds Old Field. Prior to this, Candor served as a significant hub for transportation and industry along two major rail lines: the Aberdeen & West End Railroad line built from Aberdeen to Star, and the Asheboro & Montgomery line constructed from Asheboro to Candor.

The towns connection to the railroads became even stronger with the establishment of the Norfolk & Western Railway, which connected the important port city of Norfolk with Cincinnati. Owned by the Pennsylvania Railroad at one point, the Norfolk & Western Railway was a highly profitable coal-hauler in the eastern United States before it disappeared into the larger Norfolk Southern Railway in 1964.

Today, the legacy of Candors railroads lives on through the line that still runs through town, which is expected to be purchased by the Aberdeen Carolina & Western Railway. This historic connection to the rails can be traced back to the depot built in Candor around 1920, situated at the intersection of the north-south and east-west lines of the Norfolk Southern Railroad - originally part of the Atlantic & North Carolina Railway, later known as the North Carolina Railroad.

So, as you explore Candor and its rich history, take a moment to appreciate the towns vital role in the development of Americas rail transportation system. From the Aberdeen & West End Railroad line built from Aberdeen to Star, to the Asheboro & Montgomery line constructed from Asheboro to Candor, and on through the Norfolk & Western Railway that connected Norfolk with Cincinnati - this small town has played a significant part in shaping our nations railroad heritage.
