Buxton Woods Trail

Welcome to Buxton Woods Trail, a unique and captivating 75-mile nature trail located in Buxton, North Carolina, USA. Found just across from Cape Hatteras Lighthouse on Lighthouse Road, this trail offers visitors an unparalleled opportunity to explore Americas most easternmost maritime forest.

Buxton Woods has a rich history dating back to the 1730s when several saw mills operated in the area, primarily logging pine trees. Today, the Buxton Woods Reserve is part of the North Carolina Coastal Reserve program since 1988 and spans from the village of Buxton to Frisco on Hatteras Island. This preserved forest lies between Cape Hatteras National Seashore to the south and the Outer Banks region, making it one of the last undeveloped forests in this area.

The self-guided loop trail is a 1¾ mile journey that takes visitors through the heart of Buxton Woods. Along the relatively level path, you can observe various types of vegetation - from woodier and denser plants on the ridge crests to water-tolerant plants in the swales. Each step taken on this trail contributes to preserving the unique historical and environmental heritage of Buxton Woods for generations to come.

As we embark on our journey, lets take a moment to immerse ourselves in the beauty and history that surround us here at Buxton Woods Trail.
