Welcome to the Augusta Heritage Center in Elkins, West Virginia, a vibrant hub of traditional arts that has been nurturing and preserving the rich cultural tapestry of Appalachian heritage since 1973. Initially launched as the ‘Augusta Heritage Arts Workshops,’ this program was a summer initiative dedicated to the study and practice of Appalachian music, dance, crafts, and folklore. In 1981, the program found a new home at Davis & Elkins College, where it was renamed the Augusta Heritage Center, marking the beginning of a new chapter in its mission to celebrate traditional arts.
The center quickly gained national and international recognition for its dedication to preserving the folk life and folk arts of many regions and cultures. It became a gathering place for master artists and eager learners, offering week-long workshops that culminate in public concerts, dances, and festivals. In June 2022, the Augusta Heritage Center achieved a significant milestone by operating under its own 501(c)3 non-profit status, in partnership with Davis & Elkins College. The program also acquired the Wilt Building in downtown Elkins, with ambitious plans to transform it into a vibrant center for cultural exchange. The relocation to the Wilt Building in January 2024 marked a pivotal moment in the center’s evolution, as it embarked on a three-phased renovation project to enhance its facilities.
Notable figures such as Sam Rizzetta, a dulcimer designer and musician, have contributed to the center’s legacy. Rizzetta, who founded the hammer dulcimer classes at Augusta, is a testament to the center’s role in nurturing traditional music and craftsmanship. The center also hosts a variety of events, such as the ‘Pickin’ in the Park’ jam sessions, which have become a staple of the local music scene.
The Augusta Heritage Center’s commitment to cultural preservation is evident in its extensive archival work, which includes audiovisual materials documenting over 40 years of Appalachian music and dance.
