Welcome to the Alden Community Building in Alden, Kansas. Established in 1823, the town began as a rural farming area and has preserved its history since its inception through the efforts of the Alden Historical Society. The building was originally called the Alden Historical Society Building before being given to the town by Walden Roberts, owner and operator of Youngs Mill on the town’s outskirts.
The historic building is an example of Neoclassical architecture, built in 1922. It has served various purposes throughout its history, including as the headquarters for the Glen Alden Coal Company and offices for the University of Scranton. The towns establishments include a blacksmith, church, depot, general store, grist mill, hotel, saloon, sawmill, schoolhouse, and other buildings more than 100 years old, some marked with special Century House signs.
The Alden Historical Society has been dedicated to preserving the towns history for over five decades by collecting artifacts, important documents, and creating engaging displays for visitors. Their mission is to preserve, promote, and present the history of the Town of Alden. As you explore this historic building, immerse yourself in its rich past and appreciate the unique attributes that make Alden a special part of Kansass story.
