Nestled in the picturesque hills of Knott County, Kentucky, lies the quaint locality of Mousie, a community with a rich and fascinating history. The story of Mousie is intricately tied to the development of the Caney Baptist Church, a cornerstone of the community’s religious and social life.
The establishment of Caney Baptist Church in the early 1960s marked a significant chapter in Mousie’s history. It all began when two leading educators, Charlotte Madden and Taulbee Jacobs, along with county nurses Evelyn Mottram and Ivalene Caudill, took it upon themselves to teach Bible School at the old Caney Elementary School. Their efforts laid the foundation for a religious movement that would eventually lead to the creation of the Caney Baptist Chapel.
In 1960, Taulbee and Hazel Jacobs generously donated a small plot of land to the First Baptist Church of Mousie, allowing the construction of the Caney Baptist Chapel. With the guidance of Rev. Floyd Titsworth, the community came together to break ground on April 2, 1961. The chapel’s opening service on September 9, 1962, was a momentous occasion, celebrated with the hymn ‘Count Your Blessings.’
Over time, the church evolved from a mission into an independent entity, formally becoming Caney Baptist Church in 1964 under the leadership of Pastor Lawrence Baldridge. The church has continued to serve as a beacon of faith and community for the residents of Mousie, adapting and growing alongside the community it serves.
Mousie’s historical significance extends beyond its religious roots. The location has been home to various notable figures, including Rev. J. S. Bell, who was instrumental in establishing many churches in Knott County. The community’s spirit and resilience are reflected in its ability to adapt, as demonstrated by the 1980s decision to relocate the church to a more accessible location along Kentucky State Highway 899.
Today, Mousie remains a testament to the enduring power of community and faith, with Caney Baptist Church standing as a historical landmark and a testament to the community’s unwavering dedication to preserving its heritage.
