Welcome to Johnson City, Tennessee, a place with deep roots in the world of bluegrass music. As you stand near the Rich-R-Tone Records Historical Marker, you’re in the heart of where a musical revolution took shape. Founded in 1946 by James Hobart Stanton, Rich-R-Tone Records was the first record label dedicated solely to bluegrass music, right here in East Tennessee.
Stanton, affectionately known as ‘Jim’ or ‘Hobe,’ was born in 1919 and grew up in Johnson City. His passion for music and business acumen led him to establish Rich-R-Tone Records after World War II. The label operated out of Stanton’s record store located on West Main Street, just a stone’s throw from where you are now.
During its brief but impactful existence up until the early 1950s, Rich-R-Tone Records recorded and released music from several pioneering bluegrass artists. Most notably, the Stanley Brothers began their illustrious career here, with 14 sides of 78 RPM discs released between 1947 and 1952. These recordings became foundational in the bluegrass genre, marking the start of a legendary musical journey for the Stanley Brothers.
But Rich-R-Tone wasn’t just about one band. The label showcased a variety of Appalachian musicians across genres, including country, gospel, and even some experimental sounds, capturing the diverse musical heritage of the region. Despite their limited production runs, these records have become rare collector’s items due to their historical significance and the passage of time.
Today, the historical marker serves as a reminder of the vibrant cultural and musical history of Johnson City. The city’s ongoing celebration of bluegrass continues with programs at the East Tennessee State University and various local events, ensuring that the legacy of Rich-R-Tone Records lives on.
As you continue your journey, take a moment to appreciate the rich tapestry of sounds that once echoed through these streets, and imagine the pioneering spirit of those who dared to create something new and lasting.
