Fast forward to 1927, when Max Burgdorf, the Superintendent of Utilities, decided to brighten the holiday season with a light display along Front Street. This simple gesture blossomed into the Natchitoches Christmas Festival, one of the most beloved holiday traditions in the South. Charles Solomon, affectionately known as ‘Mr. Christmas’, played a crucial role in expanding the festival’s light displays, creating intricate set pieces that still dazzle visitors today.
During the festival, more than 300,000 lights illuminate the historic downtown area and the banks of Cane River Lake, transforming Natchitoches into a winter wonderland. The festival kicks off with a grand tree-lighting ceremony, followed by a parade featuring colorful floats, marching bands, and even Santa Claus himself. Every Saturday, spectacular fireworks light up the night sky, a tradition that began in 1936.
Throughout December, the city becomes a hub of activity, with food vendors offering local delicacies like meat pies and alligator.
