Welcome to the Monongalia Arts Center, a cornerstone of Morgantown’s vibrant cultural scene. This historic building, originally constructed in 1913, began its life as the Old Morgantown Post Office. Designed in the Classical Revival style by Oscar Wenderoth, it was the first federally built post office in Morgantown, a testament to the growing importance of the town during the early 20th century.
In 1975, the building was purchased by the Tanner family, who transformed the space into what would become the Monongalia Arts Center (MAC). Mabel Tanner, a prominent local art critic and founder of the Morgantown Players, had long envisioned a community arts hub that would foster both visual and performing arts. Though she passed away in 1974, her dream was realized by her family, who established the Monongalia County Arts Association in her honor. The MAC officially opened its doors in 1978, offering a space for artists to showcase their work and share their talents with the community.
Over the years, the MAC has evolved to include two galleries and a theater. The Benedum Gallery, founded in 1979 through the generosity of the Claude Worthington Benedum Foundation, hosts monthly art exhibits showcasing a diverse range of cultural and artistic backgrounds. Meanwhile, the Robert M. Davis Gallery, located on the second floor, was expanded in 2008 to provide even more space for emerging artists and innovative art forms.
The Mabel DeVries Tanner Theatre, dedicated in 1981, has become a dynamic venue for performances ranging from classic theater productions to avant-garde music performances. It also serves as a multipurpose space for community events, including concerts and private gatherings.
As you explore the MAC, imagine the bustling activity that once filled these halls when it served as a post office. Picture the dedicated artists and performers who have brought this space to life over the decades, contributing to Morgantown’s rich cultural tapestry. This center not only preserves the artistic legacy of Morgantown but also continues to inspire creativity and innovation today.
