Welcome to the Jacumba Hot Springs Hotel, a place where history meets rejuvenation. Situated in the Sonoran Desert, just an hour’s drive from San Diego and close to the Mexican border, Jacumba Hot Springs has a rich past that dates back centuries. Before European settlers arrived, the Kumeyaay people inhabited this area, drawn to the natural hot springs known for their healing properties.
The early 20th century marked a transformative era for Jacumba. In 1919, the San Diego and Arizona Eastern Railway connected Jacumba to San Diego, catalyzing its growth into a bustling resort town. By the 1920s and 1930s, Jacumba Hot Springs was a glamorous destination, attracting celebrities like Clark Gable and Marlene Dietrich. The town’s luxurious hotels and spas offered a sanctuary for the elite seeking relaxation and health benefits from the mineral-rich waters.
However, Jacumba’s fortunes shifted mid-century. The construction of Interstate 8 in the 1960s bypassed the town, leading to a decline in tourism. Many of its iconic establishments closed, and the area fell into disrepair. Yet, the allure of the hot springs endured.
In recent years, Jacumba has experienced a revival. In 2020, a group called We Are Human Kind, led by Corbin Winters, Melissa Struke, and Jeff Osborne, purchased the Jacumba Hot Springs Hotel and much of the surrounding land. They embarked on a mission to restore the town, respecting its historical roots while infusing new life into the community. The hotel, reopened in August 2023, features Moroccan and American Southwest influences, with hand-carved doorways and native plant landscaping.
The revitalized Jacumba Hot Springs Hotel now offers a unique blend of history and modern comfort. Guests can soak in the alkaline hot springs, relax in the beautifully designed spaces, and enjoy events at the Old Bathhouse. This historic site continues to provide a peaceful retreat, just as it did in its heyday.
