The house was originally constructed by Joseph H. Lord, a significant landholder in Sarasota County, who owned nearly 100,000 acres at one point. Lord was a real estate attorney and entrepreneur who, after moving from Chicago to Florida for health reasons, became deeply involved in the development of the area. His efforts even attracted the attention of notable figures like Bertha Honore Palmer, a prominent Chicago businesswoman who later invested heavily in the region.
The Lord Higel House was initially situated in the middle of Lord’s citrus grove on the shore of Roberts Bay. When Joseph Lord moved to Sarasota, he entrusted the house and management of his affairs in Venice to George Higel. Higel was not only a grove manager but also a news correspondent, writing under the pen name Nemo. Over time, the Lord Higel House has been moved twice, once to save it from demolition, and again to its current location behind City Hall on Granada Avenue. It stands as the second oldest house in Sarasota County, offering a glimpse into the past life and times of early settlers in the area.
The house is currently undergoing restoration, thanks to the efforts of Venice Heritage Inc. and the Historic Preservation Board.
