Welcome to Siouxnami Waterpark, located in the vibrant community of Sioux Center, Iowa. While this modern waterpark offers thrilling rides and refreshing escapes, the land on which it stands holds a tale that dates back to the very beginnings of Sioux County’s history.
In the winter chill of December 1859, four enterprising men, Frederick M. Hubbell, Emerson Stone, William Frame, and Joseph Bell, embarked on a determined journey to establish Sioux County. With horses, a wagon, and provisions packed for the harsh winter, they set out to claim residency and organize what would become a thriving community. Their campsite, located about three miles south of Hawarden in a ravine known as ‘Buzzard’s Roots,’ became the foundation of their efforts.
These pioneers lived in a ‘dugout’ home reinforced with timber, a testament to their resilience and resourcefulness. Through the cold months of 1860, they fished, hunted, and played games to pass the time, all the while preparing for their petition to the court. By January 26, 1860, their efforts bore fruit when a Woodbury County judge appointed a sheriff to oversee the organization of a Sioux County government. The election that followed marked a pivotal moment: with only 15 residents in attendance, Sioux County was officially formed, with Frame, Stone, Hubbell, and Bell taking on key roles in its administration.
Over the years, Sioux County has grown from these humble beginnings into a community known for its rich Dutch heritage, agribusiness, and educational institutions like Dordt University. Sioux Center itself is a vibrant city that showcases the pioneering spirit of its founders. The waterpark you see today is a modern addition to this historic land, representing both leisure and a nod to the adventurous spirit of those first settlers. As you enjoy the attractions, remember the determination and vision of those who shaped this place into the community it is today.
