In the late 19th century, Newhall became known for another ‘gold rush’ of sorts—black gold. Charles Mentry drilled the first successful oil well in the Western United States, known as Pico No. 4. This oil well marked the beginning of California’s prolific oil industry, an industry that would fuel the growth and economy of the state for generations.
Moving into the 20th century, Old Town Newhall embraced a new role as a hub for the burgeoning film industry. Western film star William S.
