Welcome to Old Town Newhall, a vibrant historical district in Santa Clarita, California, where the echoes of the Old West meet modern revitalization. As you explore this area, you’ll find that Old Town Newhall is a key piece of Santa Clarita’s rich tapestry of history, culture, and community.
Established as the oldest neighborhood in Santa Clarita, Newhall’s roots go back to the gold rush era of the 1800s. It was here, in nearby Placerita Canyon, that gold was first discovered in California, setting off a frenzy that would forever change the landscape of the American West. The discovery was so significant that it predated the famous Sutter’s Mill find by nearly a decade.
In the late 19th century, Newhall became known for another ‘gold rush’ of sorts—black gold. Charles Mentry drilled the first successful oil well in the Western United States, known as Pico No. 4. This oil well marked the beginning of California’s prolific oil industry, an industry that would fuel the growth and economy of the state for generations.
Moving into the 20th century, Old Town Newhall embraced a new role as a hub for the burgeoning film industry. Western film star William S. Hart made his home here, adding to the area’s allure for Hollywood filmmakers. Hart’s presence cemented Newhall’s reputation as a place of dreams and cinematic storytelling.
By the 1980s, as Santa Clarita was officially incorporated, Newhall was recognized as its historic core. However, the passage of time had led to areas of decline. In response, the Santa Clarita City Council adopted the Old Town Newhall Specific Plan in 2005, aiming to preserve its rich history while transforming it into a vibrant Arts and Entertainment District. This plan has been a catalyst for change, bringing new businesses, cultural venues, and a lively atmosphere to the area.
Today, Old Town Newhall is a dynamic destination with over 60 businesses. You can visit the Walk of Western Stars, dedicated to the legends of the Western genre, or catch a live performance at The Main. Soon, the Laemmle Theatre will open, adding another layer to the area’s cultural offerings. Whether you’re here for the history, the arts, or the dining, Old Town Newhall offers a unique glimpse into the past while embracing the future.
