Elsmere’s story begins in the early 20th century with a significant community effort that led to the formation of the Elsmere Volunteer Fire Company. The groundwork was laid in 1922 when residents gathered to discuss and petition the creation of their own fire service. This initiative culminated in a special election on November 18, 1922, where the proposition to form the fire company was approved. By December of the same year, officers were elected and a constitution was established, marking the official birth of the Elsmere Fire Company.
Fast forward to May 1923, the company was incorporated, and it wasn’t long before they acquired their first fire engine, a Model ‘T’ Ford chemical truck affectionately dubbed the ‘Dinky.’ This vehicle, purchased second-hand, served the community until 1929 when it was replaced by a more modern pumper. The ‘Dinky,’ however, remains a symbol of the community’s resilience and is still used in parades and special events today.
Another significant historical marker in Elsmere is the farmhouse at 116 Elsmere Avenue, recognized as the site of Revolutionary War Lieutenant John Leonard’s home. Leonard, a German settler, played an instrumental role in the Continental Army’s victory at Saratoga and was a key figure in defending local stockades during the war. His presence in Elsmere dates back as early as 1767, and his contributions are celebrated with a historic marker unveiled in 2023.
Elsmere’s history is also marked by the development of educational facilities. One of the earliest schools in the area to educate African American children was founded by former slaves in the late 1800s. Known as The Dunbar School, it stands as a testament to the community’s commitment to education and equality.
