Cosmos Water Tower

Welcome to the Cosmos Water Tower, a true icon of the small yet vibrant community of Cosmos, Minnesota. While the Cosmos Water Tower might not have the ancient gravitas of the Roman Empire or the legendary tales of the Tower of Babel, it stands as a significant marker in the history of this charming town.

The story of Cosmos begins in the year 1867 when Daniel Jackman, a pioneer from Maine, first set foot in this area, living in a tent and cooking on an open fire until he could build a home. Jackman, alongside other early settlers like Isaac Layton and Hansom W. Young, laid the groundwork for what would become a thriving farming community. Originally called “Nelson,” the town was later renamed Cosmos by surveyor Daniel Hoyt, inspired by the Greek word meaning order and harmony.

As with many small towns in America, the arrival of the railroad in 1922 marked a turning point for Cosmos, heralding growth and prosperity. The Cosmos Water Tower, constructed during this period, became a symbol of this burgeoning era. Not just a functional piece of infrastructure, it served as a gathering point and a beacon of community pride.

Though small, Cosmos made its mark with the Cosmos Space Festival, an annual event that celebrates the town’s unique name and offers activities like a Space Festival parade, Minn-E-Rods, and even pig races. These events are a testament to the town’s spirit and ingenuity.

The water tower itself is a silent witness to the evolution of Cosmos from a humble settlement to a lively community. It has stood through decades of change, including the town’s incorporation as a village in 1926 and later as a city in 1969.

Today, while the water tower continues to serve its practical purpose, it also stands as a reminder of Cosmos’ rich history and the indomitable spirit of its early settlers. For motorists and travelers passing by, the Cosmos Water Tower is more than just a landmark; it’s a symbol of the community’s perseverance and unity.
