Established by Sue and Dirck Bass in the 1980s, the Porter-Bass estate was a passion project that transformed neglected land into a flourishing vineyard. Originally planted in the late 1800s, the estate was in rough shape when the Bass family acquired it. They faced the challenge of revitalizing soil exhausted by years of intensive farming with fertilizers and pesticides. With determination and a commitment to sustainability, they converted the vineyards to biodynamic practices, achieving Demeter certification in 2000.

Sue and Dirck Bass were not only the founders but also the visionaries who saw the potential in this land. Dirck, an architect by profession, designed the home on the property, blending modernity with the natural environment. The vineyard’s transformation was a family endeavor, with their son Luke Bass now at the helm. Luke has carried on the family tradition, introducing the Poco a Poco range to make their wines more accessible.

Porter-Bass is known for its dedication to producing high-quality Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Zinfandel wines. The estate’s Zinfandel is particularly noteworthy, with vines over 100 years old in Dot’s Garden, named after Luke’s maternal grandmother. The family legacy and the vineyard’s history are deeply intertwined, with every bottle telling a story of resilience and innovation.

The vineyard has also played a role in the broader winemaking community, providing grapes to renowned producers like Littorai Wines and Flowers Vineyard. This collaboration reflects Porter-Bass’s influence in promoting biodynamic practices and quality winemaking in the region.
