Winter Park was founded in the late 19th century as a resort community by northern business magnates. Its development took off when Loring Chase from Chicago discovered the area’s pretty lakes and enlisted the help of Oliver E. Chapman. Together, they laid out the town’s plan, planting orange trees and constructing key infrastructure.
One of the town’s proudest achievements was the founding of Rollins College in 1885, the first recognized college in Florida. Alonzo W. Rollins, a successful Chicago merchant, played a pivotal role in its establishment. His substantial donation ensured the college was built in Winter Park rather than in competing locations like Daytona Beach or Jacksonville. Today, Rollins College stands as a testament to the vision of its founders and continues to enrich the town’s cultural and educational landscape.
The Winter Park Historical Association is housed in the historic Knowles Cottage. This building has seen many transformations, first serving as a guest house for the Morse family and later becoming the office space for the Association. The Morse family, prominent in the area, also contributed greatly to the community’s cultural fabric, with Jeannette Genius McKean eventually founding the Morse Museum.
Annie Russell, an Irish-born actress of great acclaim, is another notable figure connected to Winter Park. In the early 20th century, she moved to Winter Park and joined Rollins College to help develop its performing arts program. The Annie Russell Theater, named in her honor, continues to host performances today, keeping her legacy alive.
