Welcome to Greensburg, Indiana, a charming town with a unique historical flair that has intrigued visitors from around the globe. Greensburg’s claim to fame is the peculiar phenomenon of trees growing atop its courthouse tower. The story begins in the early 1870s when a small sprig was spotted on the tower’s northwest corner. Over time, this sprig grew into a tree, and eventually, other sprouts appeared, forming a small grove 110 feet above the ground.
By 1888, concern over the structural integrity of the tower led officials to remove some of the trees, leaving two that continued to grow and garner attention. These trees, originally thought to be of various species, were identified by the Smithsonian Institution as large tooth aspens. However, more recent studies by Purdue University have reclassified the current tree as a Mulberry.
Greensburg’s Courthouse Tower Trees have become a symbol of natural wonder, drawing tourists from across the nation and even gaining a feature on ‘Ripley’s Believe It or Not’. This remarkable sight has sparked curiosity and countless theories about how the seeds managed to plant themselves at such a height.
Beyond its arboreal oddity, Greensburg has a rich history as the county seat of Decatur County. Established during a period of expansion and development in Indiana, the town has served as a hub for local governance and community events. Over the years, it has evolved while maintaining its small-town charm and historical significance.
As you explore Greensburg, you’ll be walking through a living piece of history, where nature and civic pride converge in a story that continues to captivate all who come to see it.
