Rhonda, who has a background in special education, noticed many individuals with disabilities struggling to find employment. She envisioned a place where they could learn vital job skills in a supportive environment. The journey to establish Torch 180 was not straightforward. Initially, the training program operated out of a church basement, focusing on culinary skills. However, Rhonda realized the need for more comprehensive training, including customer service and cash handling, to prepare students for real-world employment. The turning point came in 2018 when Torch 180 moved into the former Fowlerville Library building, allowing them to expand their program. By early 2020, renovations were completed, transforming the space into a vibrant café and training ground. Although the COVID-19 pandemic delayed their grand opening, Torch 180 finally opened its doors in early 2021.
