For nearly 70 years, this elegant building served the church community before embarking on a new chapter as a home for two distinguished physicians, Drs. Halvard Wanger and Sarah Elizabeth McFetridge.
Dr. Wanger and Dr. McFetridge left an indelible mark on the inn, as they expanded it with a Duke Street addition to house their medical offices. This period in the inn’s history is remembered fondly, with plaques bearing their names still adorning the building today. Yet, a small mystery remains—Dr. Wanger’s ‘infamous beige hat’ has become a local legend, though its whereabouts are unknown.
In 1984, the Thomas Shepherd Inn transformed into the welcoming bed and breakfast we know today, thanks to Ed and Carol Ringoot. They sought the blessing of Thomas Shepherd’s descendants to honor Shepherdstown’s founder by naming the inn after him. Since then, the inn has been a cornerstone of hospitality in the historic district, offering visitors a taste of Shepherdstown’s storied past.
