Welcome to the Kendall County Historical Society – Lyon Farm, a place where the past comes alive through the stories of its preserved buildings and artifacts. Established in the mid-20th century, the society was founded with the mission to preserve the rich history of Kendall County, Illinois. The Lyon Farm itself is a quintessential example of this dedication, showcasing a collection of 15 restored buildings that reflect the rural life in the region from the 19th to early 20th centuries.
Among these buildings, you’ll find a schoolhouse, a blacksmith shop, and a post office, each with its own story to tell. One of the most notable structures is the Chapel on the Green, dating back to 1855. Originally built from hand-hewn oak and walnut beams sourced from nearby Fox River woods, this chapel holds the distinction of being Kendall County’s oldest church building. Its New England-style architecture, complete with an 1899 pipe organ and original stained glass windows, provides a glimpse into the spiritual life of early residents.
Lyon Farm hosts seasonal events like the Fall Festival and Christmas at the Farm, where visitors can engage in family-friendly activities and experience the history of the area hands-on. These events bring history to life, allowing visitors to partake in activities such as butter churning and rope making, reminiscent of pioneer times.
