Welcome to The Abbey in Cañon City, Colorado, a place of history, heritage, and transformation. Originally founded in 1924 by Catholic Benedictine monks from the St. Vincent Archabbey in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, this site was established on 90 acres of land previously known as Fruitmere Orchards. This marked the beginning of what would become the Holy Cross Abbey, a site dedicated to education, spirituality, and community.
In its early years, The Abbey served multiple purposes, including housing the Abbey Boy’s School and the Holy Cross College and Seminary. It was here that young men came to learn and grow, guided by the Benedictine monks who dedicated their lives to education and faith. The school opened in 1926 with just 35 boys, but quickly grew, necessitating the construction of additional facilities to accommodate the increasing number of students.
Among the notable figures who played a pivotal role in The Abbey’s history was Father Cyprian Bradley, the first Abbot, who was instrumental in establishing the educational facilities. His successor, Father Leonard Schwinn, took charge during the Great Depression and worked tirelessly to stabilize the Abbey’s finances.
Over the decades, The Abbey evolved with the times. Unfortunately, dwindling enrollment led to the closure of the Abbey School in 1985. The property was later repurposed and added to the National Register of Historic Places. In recent years, The Abbey has become a popular venue for events and weddings, offering a picturesque setting steeped in history.
An interesting chapter in The Abbey’s story is its transformation into a winery, now known as The Abbey Winery. This winery has gained international recognition, winning awards for its exceptional wines, including a silver award at the Decanter World Wine Awards.
As you explore The Abbey today, you are walking through a place that has witnessed nearly a century of change, from its monastic roots to its current role as a cultural and event center. It stands as a testament to the adaptability and enduring spirit of the community it serves.
