The Art Park’s origin traces back to the vision of Dorothy and Robert Riester, who purchased the land in 1958. Dorothy, an artist with a flair for design, crafted their home, known as the Hilltop House, which became a centerpiece of creativity and innovation.
The land’s history stretches further back, initially settled in the early 19th century by Mary Hackley and her sons. Remnants of this early farm can still be seen today. The park’s name hails from the stone quarry that operated in the area during the late 1800s, leaving behind intriguing remnants that visitors can spot along the trails.
In 1970, the Riesters began transforming the site into a hub of artistic activity with the establishment of the Art Barn studio, hosting the Syracuse Ceramic Guild and their annual Pottery Fair. This marked the beginning of the park’s journey as a focal point for art and community engagement. By 1991, the park was incorporated as a non-profit, and the first outdoor exhibition, ‘Sculpture on the Hilltop,’ took place, solidifying its role as a cultural landmark.
Today, the park continues to thrive, offering artist residencies, workshops, and a rotating selection of sculptures from international artists. Notable figures such as Emilie Brzezinski and Rodger Mack have contributed to the park’s ever-evolving landscape. The Hilltop House itself is a work of art, designed with a keen attention to detail and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2014.
