Located in Cleveland, Texas, Splendora Gardens has a rich history that dates back to the 1970s. Originally, this serene location served as the home and studio for renowned artists Charmaine Locke and James Surls. The Gardens, set upon 177 acres of East Texas piney woods, provided a sanctuary for creativity and artistic expression.
In its early days, Splendora Gardens was more than just a home; it was a hub for artists and creatives. James Surls, known for his large-scale sculptures and drawings, and Charmaine Locke, a celebrated artist in her own right, cultivated a community of artistic collaboration and innovation. Their work not only enriched the local art scene but also attracted artists from across the country.
Over the years, Splendora Gardens evolved significantly. In 2016, Texas artist Jeff Wheeler joined forces with Surls and Locke’s daughter, Ruby, to breathe new life into the property. Together, they transformed it into the Locke Surls Center for Art and Nature (LSCAN), a venue for artistic exploration and public engagement. Under the guidance of Alton DuLaney, the director of the Houston Airport System’s public art program, LSCAN has hosted a variety of events, exhibitions, and installations that celebrate the fusion of art and nature.
One of the most notable projects at Splendora Gardens is ‘A Gift from the Bower,’ an exhibition inspired by the natural clearings within the property.
