Established in 1855 by German immigrants belonging to the Community of True Inspiration, the Amana Colonies, including South Amana, were founded on principles of communal living and religious freedom. These settlers sought to create a self-sustaining society away from the religious persecution they faced in Europe.
The Amana Colonies thrived under a communal system where resources and labor were shared among the community members. This way of life continued until the early 20th century, when the strains of communal living, economic hardships, and the impact of the Great Depression led to a pivotal moment known as ‘The Great Change’ in 1932. The community voted to separate their church from their economic activities, forming the Amana Society, Inc., a joint-stock company to manage the economic enterprises.
One of the most notable figures in this transition was George C. Foerstner, who founded Amana Refrigeration, Inc. His innovation and leadership helped the colonies pivot from traditional industries to manufacturing, marking a significant evolution in their economic landscape.
Today, South Amana and its sister villages remain a testament to their communal roots, with over 450 historic communal-era buildings still standing. These structures, along with the landscapes that were never divided, continue to reflect the colony’s storied past. Visitors can explore the Museum of Amana History to gain insight into communal life through preserved buildings like the Noé House and the Schoolhouse.
