Nestled in the picturesque Wasatch Mountain State Park, Soldier Hollow Nordic Center is a testament to Utah’s rich Olympic legacy and its enduring commitment to winter sports. Established as a venue for the 2002 Winter Olympics, Soldier Hollow played a pivotal role in showcasing cross-country skiing and biathlon events to the world. The site was specially developed by the Salt Lake Organizing Committee, with the construction beginning in 1999 and culminating in its completion just in time for the games.
During the 2002 Winter Olympics, Soldier Hollow hosted biathlon, cross-country skiing, and Nordic combined events. The venue drew in thousands of spectators who witnessed thrilling competitions against the backdrop of Utah’s stunning landscapes. One of the unique features of the venue during the Olympics was the ‘Western Experience,’ created to entertain visitors and offer a taste of the local culture with activities such as cowboy camps and pioneer reenactments.
Since the Olympics, Soldier Hollow has evolved into a dynamic year-round sports venue. In winter, it transforms into a hub for cross-country skiing and tubing, while summer brings opportunities for mountain biking and golfing. The Soldier Hollow Golf Course, completed in 2004, complements the sporting facilities available here, offering a unique blend of recreation and natural beauty.
Soldier Hollow continues to play a significant role in international winter sports, hosting numerous world-class events such as the 2019 IBU World Cup and the 2022 IBU Youth and Junior World Championships. The venue’s facilities have been continuously upgraded, ensuring it remains a top destination for athletes and tourists alike.
Notably, Soldier Hollow has also become a key location for the U.S. Biathlon Association, which relocated its headquarters to Midway, Utah, further cementing the area’s reputation as a center for winter sports excellence. This move aligns with the International Biathlon Union’s goal to grow the sport in the U.S., leveraging Soldier Hollow’s world-class infrastructure.
The center’s legacy is not just in its athletic achievements but also in its contribution to the local community. Programs like Team Soldier Hollow and the Soldier Hollow Charter School engage local youth in cross-country skiing, fostering a new generation of athletes and enthusiasts.
