This park not only serves as a tribute to Shannon Miller, a local hero and the most decorated gymnast in U.S. history, but also stands as a testament to the rich history of Edmond, which began long before the park itself.
Edmond’s roots can be traced back to March 28, 1887, when the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway named a station ‘Edmond’ after Edmond Burdick, a freight agent. This station, initially a simple coal and watering stop, was pivotal in attracting settlers during the Land Run on April 22, 1889. On that day, over 20 passenger trains stopped at Edmond Station, bringing hopeful settlers looking for free land and new beginnings.
The town of Edmond quickly began to take shape with the establishment of essential institutions. By June 24, 1889, St. John the Baptist Catholic Church had been built, marking the first church building in the Oklahoma Territory. The Edmond Sun, founded by Milton ‘Kickingbird’ Reynolds on July 18, 1889, became the first continuous newspaper, chronicling the growth and changes in the area.
Education played a crucial role in Edmond’s development. The Territorial Normal School, now known as the University of Central Oklahoma, was established in 1891 to train teachers, fostering an educational environment that would shape the town’s future. The first classes were held in the Old North Tower in January 1893, a building that remains a focal point on campus today.
Edmond’s economic landscape expanded with the discovery of oil in the West Edmond Field during the 1930s and 1940s, further fueling the town’s growth. The presence of major transportation routes, such as U.S. Highway 66, also contributed to its development.
In recent history, Edmond experienced a tragic event on August 20, 1986, when a postal worker committed a mass shooting at the local post office, an incident that left a lasting impact on the community. Despite this, the town has continued to thrive, celebrating its heritage through cultural institutions like the Edmond Historical Society Museum.
