Welcome to the Rocky River Historical Society, a cornerstone dedicated to preserving the rich tapestry of Rocky River, Ohio’s heritage. It all began on July 18, 1968, when 34 passionate residents gathered with the vision to protect and celebrate their city’s unique history. Don Macbeth took charge as president pro tem, and George A. ‘Sunny’ Christensen led the by-laws committee. Their enthusiasm quickly spread, and by September of the same year, the society boasted 84 members, with 81 already paying dues—a remarkable feat in pre-digital days.
The society’s official journey started on November 14, 1968, when the Articles of Incorporation were filed with the Ohio Secretary of State. This marked the beginning of a mission to explore and share the diverse history of Rocky River, encompassing everything from genealogy to folklore.
The Rocky River Historical Society played a pivotal role in recognizing and marking significant historical sites throughout the city. One such endeavor was the unveiling of an Ohio historical marker at the Cowan Pottery site in May 2023. Cowan Pottery, a celebrated institution from 1913 to 1931, was instrumental in shaping the artistic landscape of the area, producing pieces that now reside in eminent collections like the Smithsonian.
Bradstreet’s Landing Park, another historical gem, offers a poignant glimpse into the challenges faced by Colonel John Bradstreet’s 1764 military expedition. This site witnessed the infamous Bradstreet’s Disaster, where a sudden seiche wave wreaked havoc on the troops’ vessels, leaving a mark on Ohio’s military history.
Today, the Rocky River Historical Society continues to safeguard the past through activities like oral history programs and community events, ensuring that the stories of yesteryears remain vibrant for future generations.
