The children’s playground was entirely rebuilt during a grand community project, involving over 1,700 volunteers who worked tirelessly over a week to create a safe and vibrant play area. This effort was spearheaded by Jay Spiro and Cathy Arrington, whose vision and leadership galvanized the community into action. The project not only revitalized the playground but also became the largest community project in Jackson County’s history at the time.
The Rotary Club of Sylva, since its founding in 1928, has been a cornerstone of service in the community. Its origins date back to March 7, 1928, when 25 local men gathered to establish a club dedicated to community service. The club’s charter was signed by Rotary International founder Paul P. Harris, marking the beginning of a long tradition of community involvement. Over the years, the club has been instrumental in various service projects, including the establishment of clinics for crippled children and the creation of a ‘Scout Hut’ for Boy Scouts.
