This charming village was founded in 1845 by Swiss immigrants from the canton of Glarus, who were seeking new opportunities in the face of economic hardship back home. With the help of the Glarus Emigration Society, 193 brave individuals set off to forge a new life on American soil, eventually settling here in the picturesque landscapes of Wisconsin, reminiscent of their Swiss homeland.
The early settlers, led by Nicolas Duerst and Fridolin Streiff, purchased 1,200 acres of land along the Little Sugar River. Despite facing challenges such as harsh weather and unfamiliar terrain, these resilient pioneers established a community that has thrived for over 175 years. Their legacy is visible today in the village’s Swiss-inspired architecture, cultural festivals, and deep-rooted traditions.
New Glarus has played host to several notable events and figures. The Swiss Historical Village and Museum, established in 1942, offers a glimpse into the lives of these early settlers. It comprises 14 buildings, including an authentic settler’s log home and a replica cheese factory, showcasing the industrious spirit of the Swiss pioneers. Visitors can immerse themselves in history with reenactments of 19th-century life, from cheese-making to blacksmithing.
The village is also home to the Chalet of the Golden Fleece Museum, founded by Edwin Barlow, who was instrumental in preserving the Swiss culture in New Glarus. Barlow’s love for his heritage led to the creation of the Wilhelm Tell Festival, celebrating the legendary Swiss marksman and freedom fighter.
New Glarus continues to celebrate its Swiss roots through various festivals, including the annual Harvest Fest, where traditional crafts and trades are demonstrated, and the unique Silversterchlausen, an ancient New Year’s celebration from Appenzell, Switzerland.
