Welcome to the Metzger Farm Open Space, a serene expanse nestled between the bustling cities of Broomfield and Westminster, Colorado. This 152-acre area holds a rich tapestry of history, dating back to the mid-20th century. The story of Metzger Farm begins with John Metzger, a remarkable figure whose life was a classic rags-to-riches tale. Born to adversity, John rose to prominence as an Attorney General in Denver, known for his dedication to the underprivileged.
In 1943, Metzger found refuge from his demanding public life by acquiring a 320-acre agricultural property from his friend James T. Burke. This property, affectionately named ‘Loch-in-Vale,’ became a family haven where John and his wife Betty raised their children amidst fields of alfalfa and herds of Scottish Shorthorn cattle. Betty, a talented musician, often filled the farmhouse with melodies from her piano and organ.
The farm was far more than just a home; it was a symbol of innovation and community spirit. John Metzger, despite his success in law and manufacturing, continued to improve the land, contributing to the local agricultural scene. From raising chickens to cultivating buckhorn wheat, the Metzger family lived a life intertwined with the rhythms of the land.
In 2006, the cities of Westminster and Broomfield jointly purchased the property, transforming it into the open space we enjoy today. This purchase marked a significant collaboration between the two communities, preserving the farm’s history and natural beauty for future generations. Visitors can explore the farm’s historic structures, including a charming chicken coop and brooder house, which stand as testaments to the Metzger family’s agricultural pursuits.
Today, Metzger Farm Open Space serves as a peaceful retreat for those seeking to connect with nature and the area’s storied past. As you walk through the trails, imagine the vibrant life that once thrived here and the legacy of John Metzger, whose vision and dedication helped shape the community.
