Our story begins in the early 19th century when Levi Chandler and Samuel Franklin settled in what became known as the ‘Village of Linville Falls.’ Attracted by the lush forests and fertile valleys, these early settlers established their homes at the base of Humpback Mountain. During this period, the region’s vast hardwood forests drew the attention of settlers and entrepreneurs alike, leading to the development of a burgeoning community.
One of the most pivotal moments in the area’s history came with the construction of the Linville Falls Tavern in 1936. This Rustic Revival-style building, made from native stone, quickly became a central hub for the community. Offering a tavern, restaurant, service station, and boarding house, it was a place where locals gathered to share news and stories. The tavern’s strategic location at the convergence of Burke, McDowell, and Avery counties made it a vital social and economic center.
Linville Falls also played a role in the broader development of the region. The extension of US Highway 221 from Marion to Boone in the early 20th century facilitated economic growth and connectivity.
