Welcome to Koreshan State Park in Estero, Florida, a place where history and nature converge to tell the story of a unique utopian community. Let’s step back in time to the late 19th century, when a charismatic leader named Cyrus R. Teed, who went by the name ‘Koresh,’ founded the Koreshan Unity. This religious sect believed in a fascinating concept: that the universe existed within a hollow Earth, and they made it their mission to create a ‘New Jerusalem’ here in Florida.
In 1894, the Koreshans, under Teed’s guidance, settled in Estero after acquiring 320 acres of land from Gustave Damkohler. This land would become the heart of their community, where they built an impressive array of structures, including a bakery, sawmill, printing house, and a power plant. Their settlement was more than just a place to live; it was a self-sustaining utopia with a strong emphasis on communal living and gender equality, which was quite progressive for its time.
The settlement thrived at the turn of the century, with over 200 residents at its peak. The Koreshans were industrious, running businesses and providing cultural and educational opportunities for the local community. However, the death of Cyrus Teed in 1908 marked the beginning of the community’s decline. Despite their belief in his promised resurrection, Teed did not return, leading to dwindling numbers and eventual closure.
By 1961, the last remaining members of the Koreshan Unity deeded their land to the state, preserving their legacy as the Koreshan State Historic Site. Today, visitors can explore the beautifully restored historic buildings and lush gardens that paint a vivid picture of the Koreshans’ ambitious vision. The park also offers opportunities for canoeing, hiking, and wildlife viewing along the picturesque Estero River.
As you wander through the park, picture the Koreshan women, who made up 75% of the community, finding liberation in this unique society. Imagine the hum of the printing press in the Art Hall, where the Koreshans published their ideas and beliefs. These stories and more await you as you delve into the captivating history of Koreshan State Park.
