Welcome to the Kohler Design Center, a fascinating fusion of artistic innovation and American industrial history. Founded in 1985, this 36,000-square-foot showcase is a testament to Kohler Co.’s enduring legacy of excellence in design and craftsmanship. Originally serving as a recreation hall for the Village of Kohler, the building was transformed into a hub for inspiration and creativity. Here, you can explore thousands of Kohler products and learn about the company’s remarkable journey from a small iron and steel foundry to a global leader in plumbing and design.
Kohler Co. was founded in 1873 by Austrian immigrant John Michael Kohler, who purchased the Sheboygan Union Iron and Steel Foundry. The company’s breakthrough came in 1883 when Kohler applied enamel to a cast-iron horse trough, creating the first bathtub and setting the stage for its future in plumbing. Over the years, Kohler expanded its offerings to include furniture, cabinetry, and even engines.
The Design Center doesn’t just celebrate Kohler’s products; it also highlights the company’s commitment to the arts. Through its renowned Arts/Industry residency program, over 500 artists from 26 countries have created unique works in the Kohler Pottery and Foundry, blending artistry and craftsmanship.
Visitors to the Design Center can also delve into Kohler’s role in shaping the local community. The American Club, once a dormitory for immigrant workers in the early 1900s, is now a luxury resort and a testament to the company’s commitment to its employees and community.
Join us on a journey through time as we explore Kohler’s storied past and its impact on design, innovation, and community.
