Kentucky Artisan Center

Welcome to the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea, a bustling hub of creativity and craftsmanship that stands as a testament to the resilience and spirit of Kentucky’s artisan community. Located conveniently off Interstate 75, the center emerged from the ashes of a devastating tornado in 1996. This natural disaster had destroyed several artist shops in Berea, prompting a collaborative effort among local artisans, city officials, and representatives from local universities to create a new space that would not only revitalize the community but also preserve its rich crafts industry.

The Kentucky Artisan Center officially opened its doors in July 2003, marking a new chapter in Berea’s storied history. Initially, the center showcased the works of about 220 artisans. Today, it proudly represents over 800 artisans from across the state, offering a diverse array of modern and traditional crafts, two-dimensional art, music, literature, and specialty foods.

As you explore the center, you’ll find more than just art on display; you’ll discover stories of the people behind the creations. Each piece is accompanied by an artist’s biography, allowing visitors to connect with the creators on a personal level. This unique approach ensures that the story of the maker travels home with the buyer, enriching the experience of every visitor.

The center is not only a showcase of artistic talent but also a vibrant community space. It hosts special exhibits throughout the year, offering visitors a glimpse into the dynamic world of Kentucky’s artists. These exhibits, held in the main gallery and lobby, often coincide with live demonstrations, providing an opportunity to witness the creative process in action.

In addition to its artistic offerings, the Kentucky Artisan Center serves as a traveler’s rest stop, complete with a café that celebrates Kentucky cuisine. Whether you’re passing through or making it a destination, the center provides a warm welcome and a taste of true Kentucky hospitality.

One of the center’s most celebrated features, albeit humorously, is its designation as having the ‘cleanest and best-designed restrooms’ on Interstate 75, a title that has earned it playful acclaim.

The Kentucky Artisan Center is a shining example of community resilience and dedication to preserving the cultural heritage of Kentucky. As you walk through its doors, you’re not just stepping into a gallery—you’re entering a living testament to the creativity and perseverance of the Bluegrass State.
