Kennicott’s Grove Nature Preserve

Welcome to Kennicott’s Grove Nature Preserve, a site rich in both natural and historical significance, located in Glenview, Illinois. Our journey begins in the early 19th century with Dr. John Kennicott, a physician and agriculturalist who settled in this area with his family. In 1836, Kennicott established ‘The Grove,’ a homestead that would become a center of botanic and scientific interest. It was here that his son, Robert Kennicott, nurtured his passion for the natural world, which would later take him on expeditions to the Yukon and contribute to the founding of the Chicago Academy of Sciences in 1857.

The Grove thrived under the stewardship of the Kennicott family and became a hub for education and innovation in agriculture and natural sciences. John Kennicott was a pioneer in horticulture, establishing the first commercial nursery in the area and sharing his knowledge with other nurserymen. His influence extended beyond just botany; he was a founding member of the Illinois State Agricultural Society, helping to shape the agricultural practices of the region.

In 1973, the historical and ecological value of The Grove was recognized nationally when it was designated a National Historic Landmark. This was a result of efforts by the ‘Save The Grove’ Committee, a group of passionate locals who fought to preserve the area from development. Their dedication ensured that the Kennicott homestead and surrounding lands would remain a sanctuary for history and nature enthusiasts alike. Today, the Glenview Park District manages The Grove, which has expanded to encompass 152 acres of diverse prairie and woodland habitats. Visitors can explore the historic Kennicott House, the Redfield Estate, and the nature trails that weave through this living museum.

The legacy of the Kennicott family lives on through the many visitors who come to connect with nature and history at The Grove. Whether you’re walking the trails, learning about the Kennicott family’s contributions, or enjoying one of the many educational programs, Kennicott’s Grove offers a unique glimpse into the past and its ongoing influence on the present.
