Jensen, a retired produce buyer, who, alongside his wife Marguerite, transformed their property in Carmichael, California, into a botanical paradise. The Jensens moved from Oakland and brought with them truckloads of plants and trees, including Oaks, Coastal Redwoods, Magnolias, Azaleas, Dogwoods, and Japanese Maples, which formed the early foundation of the garden.
Charles was passionate about horticulture, dedicating his retirement to hybridizing, grafting, and acquiring new plant varieties. His efforts quickly garnered attention, making the garden a beloved spot for local visitors and a venue for special events such as weddings. After Charles’s passing, the local community recognized the garden’s value and formed the Charles C. Jensen Botanical Garden, Inc., which successfully fundraised to preserve the garden. In 1976, the Carmichael Recreation and Park District took ownership, ensuring its continued care.
Over the years, the garden has evolved with the dedicated efforts of volunteers, especially the Friends of Jensen Botanical Garden, who since 2004 have played a crucial role in its maintenance and beautification. Today, it stands as a testament to community spirit and the love of nature. Among its many features is the Nature Path for the Blind, inspired by Jacqueline Coffroth of the Daughters of the American Revolution, offering sensory experiences for the visually impaired.
