Historic Smith Eslick Cottage Camp

Welcome to the Historic Smith Eslick Cottage Camp, a fascinating window into the early days of automobile tourism. Established around 1915, this site is recognized as one of the first motor courts in Grand Lake, Colorado, designed specifically for the burgeoning population of automobile tourists. Imagine yourself in the early 20th century, when the freedom of the open road was a new and exhilarating concept. Travelers would arrive at the Cottage Camp, seeking rest and respite in a unique setting that catered to both them and their automobiles.

Founded by the enterprising Smith and Eslick families, the Cottage Court was a pioneer in providing accommodations for visitors who traveled by car. Unlike traditional lodging options of the time, this motor court offered direct access to individual cottages, allowing guests to park right next to their lodgings.

By the late 2000s, the future of the Cottage Court was uncertain. It faced demolition to make way for new developments, but the Grand Lake Area Historical Society stepped in with a mission to preserve this piece of history. Through the community’s support and dedication, the site was not only saved but restored to its former glory. The restoration included authentic early motel furnishings, offering visitors a step back in time.

Besides the historical cottages, visitors today can explore the Eslick Store, which served as the original check-in and small mercantile for guests. Now a Welcome Center, it continues to serve visitors with information and as a starting point for exploring the museum.

The Cottage Camp has evolved into the Cottage Court History Park, a place teeming with community events and educational opportunities. It stands as a testament to the innovative spirit of early 20th-century America and the enduring appeal of the Grand Lake area. As you walk through the park or take a break at one of its picnic areas, envision the stories of travelers past who once paused here on their journeys.
