The roots of Layton stretch back to the mid-19th century. In 1850, this area was originally an extension of Kaysville, known as Kays Ward. The settlement expanded along the banks of Kays Creek, Holmes Creek, and Haight’s Creek, where early pioneers like Edward Phillips, John Hyrum Green, and William Kay established their farms. The name ‘Layton’ pays homage to Christopher Layton, a prominent leader among the settlers.
By the late 19th century, Layton residents were eager to carve out their own identity. A significant legal battle culminated in the 1894 Supreme Court case Linford v. Ellison, which favored Layton’s property owners and eventually led to Layton’s separate incorporation in 1920.
