Welcome to Goshen, a locality rich in history and brimming with stories that span centuries. Goshen’s roots stretch back to the late 1600s, part of a 5,000-acre parcel known as the ‘Welsh Tract,’ purchased from the famed William Penn in 1681. By 1704, the area had formally become Goshen Township, later dividing into East and West Goshen in 1817.
The settlement of Goshen was significantly influenced by the Quakers, who built the first meetinghouse in 1702 at the crossroads of Paoli Pike and Chester Road. This meetinghouse was more than just a place of worship; it was the heart of the community where early settlers gathered to discuss important matters and strategize during the Revolutionary War.
Goshen’s history is also marked by its educational contributions. In 1959, Barbara Dixon and Hazel Wright founded Goshen Friends School to address the shortage of kindergarten education. This school has evolved over the decades, adapting to the community’s needs while staying true to its Quaker roots.
One of the most colorful events in Goshen today is the Quilt Gardens along the Heritage Trail. This unique event combines quilting, gardening, and art, featuring over a million vibrant blooms across 16 gardens and massive murals, offering a visual feast that’s truly one-of-a-kind.
Goshen College, established in 1894, has played a pivotal role in the community. Initially a private preparatory school, it quickly grew into a leading Mennonite liberal arts institution. Known for its ‘Culture for Service’ motto, the college fosters global citizenship and compassionate peacemaking.
Notably, during the Revolutionary War, Goshen was a strategic location. In 1777, British forces under General Cornwallis marched through Goshen on their way to capture Philadelphia, highlighting the area’s importance in American history.
