The name ‘Cathedral City’ was coined in the 1850s by Colonel Henry Washington of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Upon exploring the area, he noted that the canyons bore a resemblance to the grand cathedrals of Europe, leading to the name ‘Cathedral Canyon.’ This name inspired the early developers in 1925, who laid out the first subdivision and officially named the area Cathedral City.
