The story of Denton FarmPark begins in 1970 with its visionary founder, Brown Loflin. An entrepreneur and hobbyist from the local Handy community, Loflin had a knack for turning challenges into opportunities. It all started when he encountered a local rescue squad member struggling with a broken lighting generator. This meeting sparked the idea of hosting a fundraising event, which led to the creation of the first ‘Fly-In’ on July 4, 1970. Airplane rides and a hearty meal of chicken pie and green beans marked the beginning of what would become a beloved tradition.
As the event grew, so did the FarmPark. The Fly-In soon evolved into the Southeast Old Threshers Reunion, becoming a major attraction for antique machinery enthusiasts. Today, Denton FarmPark is a sprawling 170-acre site featuring 15 restored buildings, including a general store, grist mill, and a charming log cabin. A full-size steam train, the Handy Dandy Railroad, circles the park, offering a nostalgic ride through history.
One of the park’s cherished exhibits is a steam shovel, painstakingly restored after being discovered on a billboard in Virginia. The park also houses a unique piece of television history: Aunt Bee’s Studebaker, owned by actress Frances Bavier of ‘The Andy Griffith Show’. This car remains largely untouched, preserving the essence of its original owner and adding a touch of Hollywood to the park.
Every year, thousands flock to the park for the Southeast Old Threshers Reunion, a five-day celebration of antique farm machinery, live music, and community spirit. The event features tractor and horse pulls, parades, auctions, and much more, drawing visitors from far and wide.
